Latest Head's Blog

We are now truly fully immersed into the second half of the summer tern. The Year 1 children have been assessed on their knowledge of phonics and the Year 4 on their knowledge of multiplication tables. If you are a parent of a child in these classes you will be told how they got on in the very near future.
On Thursday night we held our annual art exhibition in the hall in the Infant and Nursery school. It was really well attended and we had some lovely comments from families about the quality of the art work. Well done to all of the pupils and thank you to the staff for helping them to achieve such high-quality results. Thank you to Mr Day who played his keyboard some brilliantly at the event and to Mrs Hannaford who ran the craft table on the night. Last, but not least, a huge thank you to Mrs Wright, who organised the event  and displayed all of the art work and to Mr Wright who ran the bar and helped to put up the display boards. We made just over £200, which will be used to buy materials for both schools to support the development of the art curriculum.
A reminder that next week is sport's week. You will have received a letter from Mrs Hannaford detailing what is happening each day. The main event is the traditional sport's day next Friday (20th June) Parents are invited top come to watch and support their children , joining us for a family picnic lunch. Year 6 will be running games and selling various items in order to raise funds for their end of term treats so please bring some extra pennies or even pounds to support them!
The school choir will be opening the St. Ann's Chapel fete tomorrow (14th June ) at 12.00 noon. It would be lovely to see as many of you as possible there. We also have an awesome adult and child's tombola thanks to your generosity on the mufti day last week- thank you. We will also be selling toys and books. I hope to see you there! Have a great weekend.

May 2025

On the 8th May, for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we dressed in red, white and blue and headed onto the field at lunchtime. We decorated with bunting and shared a picnic together to celebrate the end of World War II in Europe and remember all those who didn't get to see the end of the war.

This month, Year 5 have also been enjoying developing their striking and fielding skills in PE. Towards the end of the month, we have started learning about the continents: North and South America, mainly labelling their countries and key cities so far. But, we have also started looking at a Brazilian artist called Tarsila do Amaral and started to experiment with working in her style by mixing tints and shades, understanding and trying to draw objects in a surrealist way and composing Cornish-inspired landscapes in her style. These are in preparation for our Art exhibition next month!

May 2025

This month we begun studying Cornwall. Our geography question being; ‘Where in the world do we live and how could we improve our local area?’ The children used maps and atlases to firstly look at the seven continents and after recapping that we lived in Europe the children began investigating exactly where Cornwall was located. They were able to tell me, using maps and atlases that Cornwall is in the South West of England which was part of the United Kingdom which is in Europe. They also used a local OS map to locate exactly where our local area of Gunnislake/St Ann’s Chapel is. During our next lesson the children spent time creating their own sketch map of Cornwall from a high view point. This required them to use observational skills to recreate the shapes of the coastlines. Next, the children compared local maps from the 1950’s to the present day to identify similarities and differences between them. This encouraged them to ask and answer questions about place, positions, patterns and processes whilst investigating the maps.

In literacy this month we began to read and study ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. We completed lots of VIPER activities to help us learn more about what we were reading and the children spent time writing character and setting descriptions. They completed hot seating activities to help them think about the questions they may ask certain characters as well as how those characters may answer the questions. We completed work on fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and apostrophes to help us prepare for or final write. The children used a story plan to plan out the story of the Iron Man from his point of view. They used writing toolkits to make sure they were including all of the necessary features.

In Maths we finished our decimal unit whilst continuing to practice our times tables.

In Science the children have been learning about ‘Changing States’. They identified the three different states and learnt about their particle arrangements and properties. They looked at reversible and irreversible changes and melting and boiling points of different materials. They then planned out an experiment investigating the melting points of different foods.

This week has mainly been about the Year 6 class who have been sitting their end of Key Stage tests AKA SATs. It was a busy week starting with a hearty breakfast in the dining room at the Junior school of cereals, toast, pancakes , brioche and crumpets! They then sat papers testing their spelling, punctuation and grammar, reading and maths (they had to take three maths papers!)
All of the children were impeccably behaved and were calm throughout.
Big thanks to the adults who helped to make everything go so smoothly- Mrs David, Miss Cunningham, Mrs Fraser, Miss Jenkins and Mrs Pearce.
Take a look at the photograph below which shows how happy the Year 6 were when it was all over!
We were absolutely delighted to share our recent Ofsted report when the final draft was finished at the end of last week. Some of favourite quotes from the report are: "Pupils at Copper Valley Infant and Nursery Academy are vibrant, confident and happy individuals. They flourish in the nurturing and respectful culture of the school." and "There is a clear focus on strengthening pupils' vocabulary and confidence in using language."
Thank you to all members of staff from both academies who supported each other to help to achieve this super report , to the parents who completed the parent survey and to the wonderful children at the Infant and Nursery school.

Year 6 SATs - That's a wrap!

Our Year 6 children were incredible this week - they were an absolute credit to their families and took each and every day in their stride!

We began each day with a chilled SATs breakfast, where the children were able to come in and have a calm, pleasant time together before the day began.

They came in smiling, ready and enthusiastic to get the tests done and they absolutely brought their 'A Game'!

This is a class who truly do support each other and their work ethic is something to behold!

They are also a resilient group of young people - something that the Government is saying we maybe need to work on in schools - not with this amazing bunch; they have 'grit' in abundance!

Sitting SATs tests does not show all the many gifts, talents and qualities that our children possess. They measure them on the day in a limited range of subjects and while I know that our children will have risen to those challenges and shown exactly how hard they have worked towards these goals, we know that they will go on to be incredible adults who will all be successful in their own individual and brilliant ways!

A massive thank you to our families - you are raising a phenomenal group of young people and we appreciate the support, kindness and positivity that you give us each and every day!

VE Day - 80 Years on

As a a school, we commemorated the 80th Anniversary of VE Day by dressing in red, white and blue.

Year 6 took part in a UK-wide webinar involving hundreds of schools. The Webinar involved learning about British Values - what they are and how they might link in with VE Day.

All schools were invited to contribute in the chat and out of the hundreds of schools that took part, Copper Valley Junior School got a mention, much to the children's delight!

One of our pupils brought in a written account of his Grandma's memories from VE Day. Her Mum had found some fireworks from somewhere and everyone had managed to find some special food - in spite of the rationing - so they could have a street party with singing, dancing, laughing and bonfires! Celebrations went on until way past 4am!

Leading up to midday, we watched the service at Westminster Abbey and we all joined in with a 2 minute silence as a mark of respect and remembrance.

At lunchtime, we went up onto Foster's Field and shared a VE Day picnic, complete with bunting and plenty of flag-waving!

The children discussed the importance of not only VE Day but of our continuing need to remember in order to avoid any such wars from happening ever again.

We finished the day watching a special VE Day Newsround episode, which included some first-hand accounts of people's memories of VE Day.

Keyboard Project - Livin' on a Prayer!

Year 6 are lucky to be involved in a music project with Mr Jane from the Cornwall County Music Service.

Each week, they will be developing their musical skills and understanding through a variety of activities and games linked to the Bon Jovi classic, 'Livin' on a Prayer'!

Year 6 clearly have not forgotten some of the skills they previously learned in Year 5 with Mr Jane - we were all very impressed with how quickly they picked things up, listening carefully, repeating patterns and performing short melodies.

Hopefully, at the end of the project, we will be able to invite our families in for a final performance!

Another busy week has passed at Copper Valley. On Thursday we joined the rest of the Nation to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe day. Some of the Juniors joined a webinar to learn about VE Day along with hundreds of other schools across the country. We talked about how thankful we were that we hadn't experienced what war was like and how important and precious peace is. We all enjoyed a picnic lunch in the style of a 'street party'.
On Friday the Year 1 class enjoyed a trip to Burrator and visited the Discovery Centre there.
The sun shone brightly in Callington on Saturday as they celebrated the annual Mayfest. This year the theme for the giant was flying creatures. We had a fabulous ostrich with an incredibly tall neck We also had some colourful bugs to dance around alongside our big bird. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Symons and Oli for helping to transport the ostrich to and from the school as it was no mean feat! Thank you to Ivy, Imogen, Charlie, Oscar, Sophie, Henry, Freya, Serena, Aria, Ethan and Logan  who took part in the parade and represented the schools brilliantly. Additional thanks go to Miss Thomas, Mrs Wright,  Mrs Cansdale and Mrs Symons for also taking part in the procession.
Recent fundraising efforts by your good selves has resulted in a new football kit for the upper juniors (The one which Mrs Pearce got for us is sized for the lower juniors.) I thought that you might like to see it being modelled by some Y4 pupils - who will soon be upper juniors!

Spring is here!

A Busy and Brilliant Term in Our Classroom!

What a fantastic term it’s been in our class! We’ve been diving into a wide range of exciting topics across all areas of learning.

In science, we’ve been learning all about how to stay healthy. We explored the different food groups and talked about the importance of a balanced diet. We also learned about the importance of sun safety—especially as summer approaches—and discovered what UV light is and how it can affect our skin. We even investigated how shadows are formed, bringing some real curiosity and creativity to our science lessons.

In art, we were inspired by the work of Paul Klee. We looked at how he used colour, shape, and line to create his unique style, and had a go at creating some wonderful Klee-inspired masterpieces of our own!

In French, we’ve been growing our vocabulary by naming shapes. C’est fantastique! The children have enjoyed linking their language learning with their work in maths and art.

It’s been a term full of learning, creativity, and discovery. Well done to everyone for their enthusiasm and hard work!

April 2025

Much of April was spent hunting for Easter eggs and eating chocolate in the Easter break. However, on the first Monday back after Easter, Year 5 went on an exciting trip to Cotehele house. They worked alongside an ecology lecturer from the University of Plymouth to collect species and help monitor the biodiversity in their orchard. In the afternoon, the lecturer, James, suggested having a 'quick' look at the biodiversity around the pond area. Well, an hour later, we had to drag Year 5 away from the pond because it was time to catch the coach back to school!
A huge thank you to the University of Plymouth and Cotehele for this amazing, immersive day of Science!

It has been a busy first two weeks of the summer herm. Both Year 4 and Year 5 have had trips to Cotehele. Year 4 took inspirations from this beautiful setting to create some poetry whilst Year 5 explored the wildlife found in the orchard and the pond. They also received complimentary comments from the general public who were also visiting.
On Thursday we had some fantastic volunteers from "Tavy Task Force". They worked tirelessly in the hottest day of the year so far. The result was a pond (at the Infant and Nursery school) which is now usable by the children Year 1 didn't waste any time trying it out (see the lovely pictures below.) Thank you to Ken Tripp for organising this for us.
We've had 27 donations in the last 30 days, thanks to our supporters using #easyfundraising when they make online purchases! Please keep up the good work, your donations are very appreciated. March/April 2025

In History we were studying the Vikings. Our history question was; ‘Who were the Vikings and what impact did they have on Britain?’ The children asked and answered questions about the past and evaluated the reliability of their evidence to discover more about this period in history. They uncovered where the Viking period came in our history timeline and then who the Vikings were, where their homelands where and where and why they came and settled here. They then looked at the impact the Vikings had on Britain by studying how Britain was before the Vikings came to settle, how it was during their raids and this era and then after the Viking era ended.

In Maths we completed lots of work on fractions and once this unit was complete we moved onto decimals. The children also spent lots of time working on their multiplications. We have been using Times Table Rockstars to help increase our recall of times table facts.

In Literacy we were studying the story ‘How to train your dragon’. We read the story as a class over the course of the month whilst completing VIPER activities and using our Fab Four characters to investigate the story in more detail. The children completed lots of SPaG work, particularly focusing on expanded noun phrases, direct speech and fronted adverbials before eventually planning, writing and editing their very own short chapter for the book. We also looked at recounts and the children wrote their own recounts after studying the features of them and exploring recounts written for different purposes.

In March we organised and ran a careers event at the Infant and Nursery base which allowed the children to move around the school and talk to lots of different people about their jobs. The children also completed different activities relating to these peoples jobs. It was a fantastic day which we hope helped inspire children about their potential future careers.

Copper Valley Careers Fair

The Copper Valley Infant site held a careers fair for the whole school. The children learned about a wide variety of careers, having some wonderful experiences and asking lots of thoughtful questions.

Our visitors included a vet who is also a farmer, a  dog groomer, a dog walker, a health and safety manager, marine engineers, an oil tanker driver as well as information about working for the National Trust!

We are so grateful to all of our visitors for giving us their precious time and for showing us some of the many careers out there in our locality.

Hopefully, some of the children will be inspired to pursue some of these careers themselves!

If we can't go to the museum, the museum will come to us!

While Truro museum is undergoing refurbishment, the staff, along with many of their artefacts, have been using the Library Service van to come out to schools. Year 6 were lucky enough to be able to hold real primary source artefacts from both the Roman and Ancient Greek eras.

We had to wear special gloves so that we wouldn't damage the precious artefacts and we learned all about what these items can tell us about the time they originate from.

One of the favourite objects was something that baffled us. Being placed among the oil lamps, we assumed it was also an oil lamp, however, it turned out to be a baby's bottle made out of pottery!

March 2025

It has been a really busy month in Year 5 and throughout Copper Valley Academy!

At the beginning of March, we had an excellent Careers Day where we learnt about many different careers, from mobile dog groomers to HGV driving, health & safety to dentistry. We ALL learnt so much and the day was really enjoyable. Also this month, it has been World Book Day, so many members of the class came in dressed as book characters and we completed some exciting activities about amazing books! Then, it was Comic Relief. We came in dressed in pyjamas mainly, because, why wouldn't you? And our brave school councillors were 'pied' in efforts to help raise money for the charity.

In the classroom, we have been learning about Earth and Space , which has sparked an interest from many Year Five pupils. We have looked at the size and order of the planets, how they move in our solar system and how the sun creates night and day and the seasons. This has linked nicely with our Geography this term, where we have been learning about the make-up of the Earth, the tectonic plates and how these can cause disasters on our planet.

Told you it's been busy!

It was the last matches of the Callington football league and our team had a great evening where they won a match and then lost one. I was very impressed with their sporting behaviour and superb teamwork.
The Reception class visited Ferry Farm at Calstock last week and had an amazing time meeting a whole host of interesting animals.
This week we were visited by Plymouth Argyle, featuring some of their players, including one of the trainers who is an ex pupil of Delaware. Pilgrim Pete also made in an appearance. Pupils from Y3 to Y6 wore Green mulfti and raised £40 for Project 35  which supports families living in poverty in Plymouth.

Red Nose Day and more!
Thank you to those of you who came and supported us at the Jumble Sale at the Junior school a couple of Saturday's ago. We raised over £240 which has gone to the Junior base to invest in some equipment for the children to use at break times.
Some of our Y3 and Y4 pupils were busy last week helping to create the new giant for Mayfest which takes place in Callington on Saturday May 10th. Our Phoenix is all set to transform into a huge ostrich this year with some colourful bugs to accompany her!
Today (21st) was a very successful Comic Relief/Red Nose Day. We really appreciated your support with this event which is raising funds for good causes in this country and in Africa. The children really enjoyed coming to school in their pyjamas, dressed as superheroes or teachers!
The school council based at the Infant school did a fantastic job painting red noses on people and giving them superhero tattoos.
The brave school council from Year 5 and Year 6 were 'splatted' with 'pies'.
Once we have counted up the money, I will let you know what your generous contributions have raised.
Please take the time to sign up to the parental consultations which are taking place next week. I will be around on Monday and Tuesday after school if you would also like to talk to me - just pop into the office at the Junior school on the Monday night or the Infant school on the Tuesday night.
I hope that you all have a great weekend with your families.

February

This term, we are paying particular attention to different life cycles and engaging in the theme 'minibeasts'.

Our literacy is based around the author Eric Carle. We are having great fun with his books, engaging us in our topic in literacy, science, DT and art.

We are excited to have our caterpillars, which we hope will transform into beautiful butterflies. We have been on a minibeast hunt, and although we did not find any caterpillars outside, we found worms, centipedes, spiders, woodlice and beetles.

Our Design Technology, this term is also all about minibeasts. We are busy trying new techniques using levers and pivots so that we can then design and make our own minibeast moving picture.

Finally, we are going to be visiting a farm to continue investigating lifecycles. We are hoping to see some lambs and maybe baby chicks.

A busy week at Copper Valley!

What an incredibly busy week it has been. On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day. It was so lovely to see so many children dressed up as characters from books. They enjoyed lots of stories being read to them during the day and loved discussing their favourite books.
Friday was a very special day as we held our first ever Career Fair at the Infant and Nursery school. Our Year 5 and Year 6 joined us for a day finding out about a range of jobs. The children found out, first hand, what it takes to become a vet, a health and safety consultant, a tanker delivery driver, a dog groomer, an engineer, a dog walker  and Taekwondo teachers. Evaluations from the children were overwhelmingly positive and the adults leading the sessions were very complimentary of the pupils.
I would like to send a massive thanks to the volunteers we gave up their day to lead the sessions, all the staff for supervising the groups and a special thanks to Mrs Wright who, with Mr Wright, ensured that the appropriate risk assessments were in place for the event. Mrs Wright also contacted the participants and organised the complex timetable.
We hope that this will be an annual event as it was so valuable to see our children inspired by the adults from the workplace.
We ended the day with some Cornish dancing and a beautiful dance solo by Ivy Symons from Year 6.
Our enterprising pupils Bella, Harper, Georgia and Charlie made £55 selling drinks and cakes in aid of Gables animal shelter- thank you for supporting them and well done to you- what a lovely, thoughtful act.
I hope that you all have a lovely weekend.
