This week we practised using running stitch in DT, and we could not believe how quickly everyone managed to pick it up. We had to adopt our growth mindsets, but our determination shone through! Some of us may choose to use running stitch next week, when joining parts on to our sock puppets. In Science, we explored how different animals are best suited to the habitats they live in. We learnt about camels and the special features they have which help them to live in the desert. We also looked are polar bears. Can you recall any of the special features they have? During Music with Mrs Butlin, we practise using the chime bars and completing 4 beat patterns.

In Maths, we have made a fantastic start on our Addition and Subtraction unit, adding and subtracting 1s, 10s and 100s. We have been working on how to present our calculations neatly in our books and used pictorials to support our understanding. 

In English, we have been writing up our recounts, focusing on quality over quantity. With this in mind, we have diligently used our classroom resources to support our writing. Next week, we will finish editing and get these written up neatly.

Animal Sock Puppets
As part of our enquiry 'Who rules the animal kingdom?', we have designed and planned to make our own animal sock puppets in DT. On Wednesday 22nd October, we will be finally making our designs. We have a selection of brand new socks available for the children to use in school, which were kindly donated to us. However, if your child would like to bring in their own sock from home to use when creating their sock puppet, they are welcome to do so. Of course, please do let me know if you have any questions.

This week in Lantic we have had loads of fun learning how to write instructions for carving a pumpkin. We all had a go at scooping out the seeds and pumpkin flesh! We then wrote our set of instructions using bossy verbs to make our writing accurate and interesting.

Lantic have really loved this and they should be really proud of their writing. In maths, we have been exploring addition and subtraction, learning to subtract within 10. We have been using counters to help us. In DT we finished our wheel and axle pull along toys which all look very colourful and fun! We then evaluated our end products and decided what we liked and what we could improve on. In PE, we have been playing mini cricket and got some amazing games on the go.There are some very talented cricketers in Lantic!

On Friday we had an amazing skipping workshop where we developed our skills. We then saw a skipping show from our professional which was absolutely fascinating - she even did 'pretzel skipping'! What a week! As usual please continue to read with your children at home for 10-15 minutes per day. Anton maths should be all working well now and there is work set for this week. Year 6 Bikeability
I really loved taking part in Bikeability! We had so much fun and learned loads about how to stay safe while cycling around Wadebridge. It wasn't just about riding bikes - it was also about learning new skills, supporting each other, and building confidence. Our instructor, Phil, taught us all about F.O.R.K, which stands for:
• First
• Observation
• Road Position
• Communication
He said that if we always remember F.O.R.K, we'll be much safer on the road - and he was right. It helped us stay calm even when things got a bit tricky. One of the best parts of the experience was the teamwork in our group. We encouraged each other, waited for those who needed more time, and shared tips to help everyone improve. It didn't matter if someone was nervous or made a mistake - we helped each other keep going.

Year 4 Trip to Bodmin Jail
As part of our Victorians learning journey, we visited Bodmin Jail to discover what life was like for prisoners in the past. The visit gave us an immersive experience and really helped us to understand Victorian punishments and crime. One of the most exciting (and slightly spooky!) parts was exploring the cellars where prisoners were once kept. We could imagine how cold, dark and frightening it must have been.
• Bryleigh said, "It's really cool but really scary!"
• Jay explained, "It's haunted!" - linking to the many Victorian ghost stories and myths we learnt about.
• Ellie learnt about the mysterious Beast of Bodmin Moor.
• Masuma found it interesting that prisoners had to spin the huge wheel 15,000 times a day for the mill - an example of the hard labour used as punishment in the Victorian period.
• Toby discovered that the Lightford brothers were pickpockets who got sent to jail.
• Brodie learnt that people always had to go to court before being sent to prison, helping us compare justice systems then and now. The trip linked well to our Victorian studies - it helped us understand how punishment and prison life reflected the values and challenges of Victorian society. We came back with real-life examples to bring our classroom learning to life.

Year 5 Stay and Learn
All the Year 5 pupils had a grand time this morning! They welcomed their parents into a 'Retail Park' that they created. Some of the shops were: WadeWell Pharmacy, Bridge Schools Build-a-Bear and the Old Bridge Bakery. The parents had to help us with real-life maths to help with our shopping. There were 3 stations - Callister's Clothing, OD's Food Court and Wilton's Wacky Party Parlour. The children and parents had to work out questions and stay in budget. We finished by playing I'm a mathematician get me out of here! using whiteboard paddles to reveal our answers like we do in class. The parents got a little bit competitive with this!

Lost Property
Next week, please take a look at the lost property outside the main entrance. Anything not claimed by Thursday will be donated to either FOWPA or a local clothing bank. If you arrive earlier than your appointment, please come to the Hall, where there will be refreshments kindly provided by Caterlink. A few minutes before your appointment, please make your way to your child's classroom, waiting outside on the seats until called in. We need everyone's support in keeping to time. Unfortunately if you arrive late, we will still need to finish the appointment on time, given other parents will be waiting. It's also important for our staff, so they can get home after a longer day than usual. Thank you for your support.

Another Fantastic Week of Fun and Learning!

What a busy and exciting week it's been in Tregantle Class!

The children have been fully immersed in our class story "Whatever Next!" by Jill Murphy. We've been learning lots of new words from the story, acting out Baby Bear's wonderful adventure to the moon, and sequencing the key parts to help us remember what happens first, next, and last. Everyone has shown amazing enthusiasm and imagination!

In our Wild Tribe session, we took inspiration from our rhyme of the week, "Dingle Dangle Scarecrow." The children worked brilliantly together, drawing around each other and using natural materials to create giant scarecrows! There were some very creative designs and plenty of teamwork on show.

Over in our Exploration Area, the children have been busy investigating bugs and soil. They've shown fantastic curiosity as they've dug, discovered, and talked about all the little creatures they found living underground.

We finished the week with a fun skipping workshop, where everyone had a go at learning new skipping techniques. The hall was full of smiles, laughter, and lots of jumping feet!

Another brilliant week in Tregantle Class - full of fun, learning, and adventure!

We have had a fantastic week of learning at Darite. Class 1 have been learning about Charles Macintosh and waterproof materials. They conducted an experiment to find out which materials repel water the best. Class 2 had an amazing afternoon with a group of people from Sterts who came in to work with them as part of a series of drama workshops. Thank you to everyone who came to our Harvest Celebration. The children really enjoyed cooking for you and performing their songs. We are extremely grateful for the food donations which will be collected by Liskeard and Looe Foodbank next week. Congratulations to all of the runners who took part in the East Cornwall School's Cross Country race at Great Trethew last Friday. The next race is on Friday 14th November at Lanhydrock. Next week we have the Autumn Term parent consultations. If you haven't booked a slot but would like to meet with Mrs Lake or Mrs Morris please book using Arbor. If you have any problems, or can't find a suitable time, please email Mrs Norris. Entry to the parent consultations will be through the main reception where you will be able to wait until your appointment. Clubs will continue to run as normal next week but school is closed to pupils on Friday for a staff INSET day.

This week has been full of fantastic learning opportunities. 

In English, we have started writing our non-chronological reports about where energy comes from. The children have been working really hard to include scientific language, interesting facts and structure their work so that it has cohesion. They are looking wonderful and I am amazed by how creative they are. 

In maths, we have moved onto our new unit of fractions. We started by finding equivalent fractions and simplifying them. Next, we will learn how to add and subtract them. 

We were lucky to have a skipping workshop today in the hall. It was hilarious and we learned many new skills. We started with simple skipping, then skipping backwards, hopping on one foot, crossing our arms and then jumping into a long rope. All of the children learned something new and I was impressed with their abilities.

We have also had the opportunity to take part in some orienteering outside using the new stations around school. In the first session, we went hunting for different animals and in the second session, we answered some questions about Mary Seacole and Nelson Mandela for Black History Month. We had to check each station for a number to see if we had got the answer correct.

October

This October has been a busy month. Eddie enjoyed a day out at the Wild Wood where he visited the Saxon Village. Here he found out how they lived. We explored the different types of huts they lived in and tried out the wooden bed. It was not very comfy but the animal skins kept the Saxon's warm. The Saxon's had metal helmets and long tunics, using spears, axes and swords. The Spears were good for hunting, axes for wood and swords for fighting. 

We were lucky to have a go at making flat bread and woodwork. The flat bread was delicious. 

Wild Wood, also had a very tricky maze...we eventually found our way out. We had time at the end to visit the different animals including the bears. One was asleep in the tree. 

Freddie enjoyed a special day at school, when the fire engine arrived for the children to take a look at and listen to fire people explain what they had to do in their job.

We have also been busy in class. Leo is showing one less from 5 as he joins in with the '5 Little Monkey's rhyme' (one of his favourites).

It all started in summer 2024. We had 10 stick insect eggs. Stick insects take 2-3 months to hatch. Of those 2 survived to adults which is 6 months old. Once they get to 6 months old they start laying eggs. We found out the they can lay up to 100 eggs! Fast forward to summer 2025 and we had 80 baby stick insects. We have learnt a lot along the way and we have had to get a bigger tank for them to live in. They are now thriving and we've lost count of how many we have. See how many you can spot in the pictures. Make sure you have a look next time you are in school. 

This week in Little Foresters we have been focusing on retelling stories and adding actions. Our focus story at the moment is Rapunzel. The children put on their magic storytelling cloaks that gave them magic story voices. The children then thought of actions to match certain words in the story. They all did a fantastic job and were great storytellers. 

Year 2 and 3 Weekly Learning Round-Up!

What a fantastic week it's been in Years 2 and 3! The children have been full of enthusiasm and curiosity as they've explored a wide range of topics across the curriculum. Here's a look at what we've been up to:

English

We've started our brand-new unit on non-chronological reports. The children have enjoyed retelling information, finding key features of reports, and exploring how to make their writing more interesting using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions (for example, and, but, because, when). It's been wonderful to see them becoming more confident and creative writers!

 Maths

In maths, we've been building on our understanding of addition and subtraction. Using base 10 equipment, the children have been adding and subtracting ones, helping them to see how numbers are made up and how we can manipulate them. Lots of hands-on practice and problem-solving this week!

 History

Our journey through Ancient Egypt has taken an exciting turn as we discovered the fascinating process of mummification. The children were captivated by learning why and how the Ancient Egyptians mummified people - a perfect blend of curiosity and a few giggles!

 PE

In PE, we've been developing our netball skills, focusing on shooting techniques and key game skills like passing, spacing, and teamwork. The children are becoming much more confident on the court!

 RE

Our focus in Religious Education has been how Jewish people belong to their faith. We've discussed traditions, celebrations, and what belonging means in different communities - thoughtful and respectful conversations all around.

 French

Bonjour! We've been learning all about France and the French language. The children have been exploring greetings, simple words and phrases, and learning a little about French culture. They're already saying bonjour and au revoir with confidence!

 Science

We've been assessing our knowledge in our 'Animals Including Humans' topic. The children have shown a fantastic understanding of body parts, life cycles, and how humans and animals grow and change.

Special Event: Skipping Workshop!

Friday brought a burst of energy with an exciting skipping workshop! The children had great fun learning new skipping tricks and working together to keep those ropes moving - a brilliant way to combine fitness and fun.

 Reading

Throughout the week, we've been focusing on reading fluency - helping children to read more smoothly, accurately, and quickly. They've been working hard on understanding and answering questions about the texts they read, showing real progress in comprehension.

It's been a busy and rewarding week full of learning, laughter, and new discoveries. We're so proud of how hard the children are working and can't wait to see what next week brings!

The children have made an excellent start to Year 2.
They have been really enjoying our big question - 'What happened in the Great Fire of London?'.
We have been learning all about he events that took place and thinking about why things happened as they did.
We have sequenced events and compared fire fighting methods, houses and London itself.

In Literacy we have been continuing with our 'Curious Quests' which has involved writing diaries, writing instructions and stories.
Maths has been mainly about place value, ensuring that we are confident with what the different digits represent, ordering and comparing numbers and many other key skills.

In Art, we have been creating collages with flames and Tudor houses. We also created some fabulous boat paintings for the Honey Fair.
In Music we have been singing chants, rhymes and songs and we also learned to sing in a round.

Science has been all about materials. We've had great fun making bridges and testing their strength, also testing the elasticity of different materials and finding out which material is the most waterproof.

Storytellers enjoyed listening to the traditional tale The Little Red Hen. The children talked about why the hen's friends wouldn't help her and whether it was kind for them to expect to eat her bread after doing none of the hard work! This sparked some lovely discussions about kindness, teamwork, and helping others.

 After the story, the children had the chance to become little bakers themselves! They helped weigh the ingredients and took turns kneading the dough, noticing how its texture changed as they worked. The room soon filled with the wonderful smell of baking, and the best part of all was tasting their very own freshly baked loaf - warm, golden, and absolutely delicious!

 We were also very grateful to get all our ingredients from our fantastic Village Shop, helping the children understand where food comes from and how our local community supports us.

 This activity was not only great fun but also a wonderful learning experience. Listening to and discussing the story supported the children's understanding of morals and empathy, while baking helped them develop early maths and science skills through weighing, measuring, and observing changes. Working together encouraged sharing and cooperation, and the sensory experience of kneading dough built fine motor skills - all while giving them a real sense of pride and achievement in what they'd made.

Blisland Primary Harvest Celebration

Last week, Blisland Primary came together to celebrate one of the most special times of the year - Harvest. It was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to reflect on where our food comes from, the importance of farming in Cornwall, and the value of sharing what we have with others.

Our Harvest Assembly was held in the beautiful Blisland Church, and it was a truly heartwarming occasion. The children sang a collection of traditional and modern harvest songs with great enthusiasm, filling the church with joyful voices. They also shared poetry they had written themselves, celebrating the changing seasons, the hard work of farmers, and the beauty of the Cornish countryside. 

Parents, carers, and members of the community joined us for the event, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere that captured the spirit of the season perfectly. A highlight of the celebration was our harvest auction. The children helped to present beautifully arranged vegetable boxes filled with locally grown produce. These were auctioned off at the end of the assembly, raising over £80 for the Wadebridge Food Bank. We are so proud of our pupils for their enthusiasm and for understanding the importance of helping those in need. We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community. The donations for the food bank were incredible - from tins and pasta to fresh vegetables and toiletries. It was inspiring to see how everyone came together to make a difference. We want to extend our sincere thanks to all who donated, supported, or attended our Harvest event.

Throughout the week, pupils also learned about harvest traditions in Cornwall and explored how farming continues to play a vital role in our local economy and way of life. From understanding how crops are grown to learning about sustainable farming, the children developed a deeper appreciation for the people and processes that keep our communities fed. Our Harvest celebrations truly showed the strength of the Blisland community - full of kindness, gratitude, and togetherness. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a memorable week.

We have been continuing with our enquiry question "How do I know it is autumn?".
The children have been very busy this week making orange bird feeders to take home and hang in gardens and have enjoyed collecting leaves to make an autumn bookmark.
The children have been learning about hibernation and so we made clay hedgehogs and put them in their little house to have a sleep before they went home.

Today (Friday) we have enjoyed going onto the field and into the school garden where as part of phonics we read the story of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". The children were encouraged to copy and make movements from the story and to move in different ways. We enjoyed a snack of porridge just like Goldilocks and the children answered questions from the story.
Also in phonics this week we have been exploring different words that rhyme when mixing them in a bowl in a game of "Lumpy, Bumpy Porridge", exploring sounds that we can make using our voices and have played a game of "Goldilocks, please be quiet" where the children had to listen and recognise familiar sounds they heard.

In maths we have been ordering numbers and identifying numbers that we see in our environment both indoors and out.

Just a reminder that it is INSET next Friday (24th) and then half term week.
